George Lawson Gallery: Michael Voss - Selected Paintings.

Comment by AB: Small-format oil paintings on linen by Brazilian-born New York artist Michael Voss are really well-done and all, especially from brushstroke and textural perspectives. But there's also an awful lot of simulacrutudinous iterations and their cousins populating the artscape right now. To counter that gambit, the conspicuously convoluted deposition attempts to winnow these out from the rest with, among other assertions, these gems of art garble-- "It is as if we were getting our news from tree bark" and "Sleep is such a ground and sleeping pills are technology, or nutrition and vitamins." Checkmate.

Bash Contemporary: Tales of the Uncanny - Sandra Yagi, Marc Burckhardt, Hannah Yata, Mila Sketch.

Comment by AB: The odd, the strange, the skeletal, and the diminutive. Admirably intricate stipple works on paper by Mila Sketch, purse X-Rays in particular, are worth noting here-- and rather attractively priced.

Comment by AB: Calvin Ma makes fabulous ceramics. That's just all there is to it. For him it may be a therapeutic experience but for me it's pure pleasure.
