Mark Wolfe Contemporary Art: Nothing Goes Away - Todd Lanam; Nocturnes - Brad Woodfin.

Review by Anneliese Vobis: Todd Lanam's work is an investigation of two contrasting worlds. His multi-layered paintings combine reality with ghostlike fantastic imagery from the subconscious. This strong pictorial language echoes the expressionist styles of Paul Klee and Henri Matisse. Lanam's work evokes the viewers' feelings rather than descriptions of nature.

"Nocturnes" by Brad Woodfin portray detailed depictions of animals in oil paintings on canvas. The dark dramatic scenes remind to the color palette of Rembrandt. Woodfin uses soft light colors to create depth, thereby placing the animals as the centers of interest.

Review by RWM: Great to see the beautiful birds coming out of the darkness. Is it true that some considered the wild ungodly, i.e. everything there is relegated to baser emotions? Are these images of things that have escaped into civilization because they are curious and beautiful? Great statement here about survival and novelty. Easy to bond with the animals that are on display. Nice to enjoy their idosyncracies during the night.

Nieto Fine Art: John Nieto - One Man Show.

Review by Anneliese Vobis: Powerful expressive portraits of Native Americans and strong depictions of animals are the key points of this storytelling show. The vibrant choice of colors reminds to the symbolism and rich style of Gauguin.

1am Gallery: Frank Kozik - Kozik.

Review by Anneliese Vobis: Retrospective solo show of art by Frank Kozik spanning the last 30 years. Kozik's work is loaded with political messages, comic imagery, advertising, pop surrealism, and much more. His material-rich work melts the arts and mass media into a critical cultural communication.

Comment by AB: Plenty to see here.

Park Life Gallery: Ian Johnson - Straight Ahead.

Comment by AB: The latest aesthetic episode in a history of jazz art escapades by Ian Johnson, this time eloquently whisking in brilliant colors and geometric precision. This dude just keeps gettin' better. For those of you keeping score at home, you'll find no computer tricks or digital manipulations in his manifold depictions of musical greats-- all originals executed entirely by hand. Recommended viewing.
