Comment by AB: Yes, dear artsters and connoisseurs of all life's fineries... it's time once again for The San Francisco Fall Antiques Show, held annually at Fort Mason Center's Festival Pavilion, the most exquisite art and antiques exhibition The City has to offer. As always, tonight's gala opening night bash benefits Enterprise for High School Students, an eminently admirable organization that provides career resources and employment opportunities for San Francisco youth. Top domestic and international dealers have trundled their way on out to the pier to exhibit the best in antique, period and moderne furniture, rugs, tapestries, oddities, curios, sculpture, jewelry, garden ornaments, antique and modern paintings, rare books, folk and ethnographic art, jewelry, silver, ceramics, flags, photographs, posters and plenty more.

The Festival Pavilion is packed to the rafters with socialites, sycophants, lamb chop addicts, fashion plates, poof balls, strutters, sexpots, and party people of all persuasions, here for the gala preview whoop-dee do, and I do mean whoop-dee-do. The mood is upbeat to say the least, actually more like exuberant, perhaps due to our wild boomtime tech-stoked Bay Area economy. Staid antiques and antiquarians are gradually giving way to purveyors of moderne and postwar furnishings and decorative arts (Mallett and Iliad, New York & epoca, San Francisco, for example); kicky vintage pop culture curiosities (American Garage, Los Angeles); 20th century artist jewelry (Didier Ltd, London); and that's just for starters. The best part? Nobody goes home hungry (or sober)!

The show runs through Sunday and is definitely worth a visit. And now for a smattering of gala scenario snippets for your edification and enjoyment...
