Stephen Wirtz Gallery: Mike Brodie - A Period of Juvenile Prosperity.

Comment by AB: Mike Brodie and associates travelled the land, often by freight train hobo-style, and documented this subculture and their day-to-day adventures along the way. It's a romance-- kind of a perilous romance, but a romance just the same. Worth a visit.

Haines Gallery: David Maisel - Mining.

Comment by AB: David Maisel photographs open pit mines from the air and in so doing, points up how drastically they alter the landscape and our environment. Regardless of the impact, we all need what these mines provide in order to survive. So is there any redeeming beauty in scarring and toxicity? Do we have a choice or a say in the outcomes of these endeavors? No shortage of opportunities for contemplation here. Go see.

    Jenkins Johnson Gallery: Seven Sisters.

Artists: Carrie Mae Weems, Mickalene Thomas, Rina Banerjee, Patricia Piccinini, Camille Rose Garcia, Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, Toyin Odutola, Vanessa Prager.

Comment by AB: The show's title, Seven Sisters refers to the mythological Pleiades, the seven daughters of Atlas. The artists in this show are not sisters, but they're all well-known and well established, and here essay on various aspects of "ethics, race, culture, and self-expression."

Hang Art Gallery: Katherine B. Young - Places of Reflection.

Comment by AB: Katherine B. Young's seascapes and beach scenes appear to have a mysterious or almost mystical quality about them. On closer inspection, I see that they're accented with subtle shades of metallic paint-- mainly gold and silver.

Spoke Art Gallery: Through the Veil - Tatiana Suarez and Craww; Jonas Lofgren.

Comment by AB: It's a mix of fantasy femmes big eyes gone wild in the west gallery, and in the east gallery, Jonas Lofgren gives us a graphite drawing glimpse into his really weird world.

Ramon's Tailor: You Can Do This - Sam Mell.

Comment by AB: Sam Mell goes criss-cross crazy as he plasters the gallery with his rigorous pattern drawings.
