  • New Langton Arts: Lynn Hershman Leeson - The Floating Museum (1975-1978); Julio César Morales - tomorrow is for those who can hear it coming.

Comment by AB: This is amazing. For the first time in the history of me, I can actually grasp the essence of a New Langton Arts show simply by reading the press release. In honor of this momentous occasion, I hereby lavish the author(s) as well as the gallery with cornucopias of commendations and kudos for keeping me in the game (not an easy accomplishment).

So OK. In the front gallery, Julio César Morales creates an installation, the centerpiece of which is a two-screen video reenactment of Mexican General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo's last hours in power in Alta California, filmed on location at Vallejo's Casa Grande in Sonoma, CA. One screen is shot from the Mexican perspective, the other from the American perspective. Nicely done. In the rear gallery, you'll find documents, ephemera, images, and memorabilia from Lynn Hershman Leeson's Floating Museum (1975-1978), an entity that "commissioned artists to create (over 400) installations in rural landscapes, public buildings, city streets, and prison courtyards, as well as in the non-space of sound and the airwaves." Gratifying on both counts; go see.
