  • Sculpturesite Gallery: Body Language II.

Artists: Diedre DeFranceaux, John Denning and Christin Nelson.

Comment by AB: Three artists; figurative sculpture. And that, as they say, pretty much sums it up in a nutshell. In the here's-something-you-don't-see-everyday department, Deidre DeFranceaux's serially inflating & deflating naked latex figures will likely slow you down.

Modernism Gallery: Charles Arnoldi - Works 1990 to 2008.

Comment by AB: From expressive twig-like abstractions to graceful arcs and amoebic forms to rich colorful definitively partitioned fields-- here you witness Charle's Arnoldi's dramatic evolution over the past twenty years. A lavish and extensive survey of the artist's work (Charles Arnoldi, 240 pages, 160 color illustrations, Radius Books, Santa Fe, NM, 2008) is available for purchase at the gallery.

Comment by AB: Major art auction fundraiser to benefit the Coalition on Homelessness, San Francisco features tons of art by loads of artists, much of it good, making this an an exceptional buying opportunity for a number of savvy collectors who I notice wending their way through the throngs. Plenty of support for the cause. Perhaps the highlight of the evening is Sara Thustra putting his entire life's work up for auction with an opening bid of only $5. Not sure what the hammer price was, but acquisition opportunities don't get much better than that. Thustra also produces a fine looking screenprint to advertise and commemorate the event.

Comment by AB: Not your everyday art show, and one of the reasons I'm a big fan of SomArts-- you see shows here you'll see nowhere else in Ess Eff. This time around, it's a group show of contemporary Mongolian art. The art ranges from realistic to nonrepresentational and ranges in price from $400-$10K, most in the low thousands $$. Not planning on visiting Mongolia anytime soon? Get a unique glimpse of it here, courtesy of its artists.
