The McLoughlin Gallery: Who's Afraid of Color?

Artists: Brian Moore, Kristina Quinones, Meghann Riepenhoff.

Comment by AB: Depthy high-gloss acrylics on panel by Kristina Quinones entice with fluid spontaneity. Cosmic chromogenic prints by Meghann Riepenhoff overflow with energy. Naive compositions with youthful subject matters and abundant cupcakes by Brian Moore confound my aesthetic sensibilities.

    Highlight Gallery: Jesse Schlesinger.

Comment by AB: Jesse Schlesinger, Highlight Gallery's August artist-in-residence, constructs an oversized overpowering timber installation specific to the space.

Gallery Wendi Norris: Howie Tsui - Radiant Specters; Dana Harel - Wrestling God; Stellar Orbits - Lovers and Intellectuals Among Surrealists and Their Peers.

Artists in the surrealist show: Max Ernst, Dorothea Tanning, Gordon Onslow Ford, Wolfgang Paalen.

Comment by AB: Inaugural triple-bill for Gallery Wendi Norris, formerly Frey Norris Contemporary & Modern. In the center gallery, Howie Tsui's got that apocalyptic thing goin' on with a sort of Masami-Teraoka-meets-Manuel-Ocampo blend. In the left side gallery, Dana Harel's unsettling oversized graphite drawings are inspired by the biblical account of Jacob wrestling an Angel. In right side gallery, enjoy an impressive selection of Surrealist and Surrealist-inspired works, several on exhibit directly from the artists' estates.

Sherwood Gallery: Cheese Box - New Work by Clint Imboden.

Comment by AB: Knickknacks, baubles, tchotchkes, heirlooms and remnants of the past are combined in curious ways and displayed in vintage wooden cheese boxes. Components include false teeth, trowels, religious figurines, sunglasses, shaving brushes, lavatory keys, a magnifying glass, faucets, an 8 ball, and quite a bit more.

Spoke Art Gallery: Fade and Finish - Jessica Hess.

Comment by AB: Jessica Hess paints up a crackerjack batch of her signature graffiti-laden cityscapes in gouache on paper. Difficult to decide which she paints better-- the architecture or the murals and tags that cover it. Good work; check it out.
