Braunstein/Quay Gallery: Jeff Adams - New Paintings; ACCESS Program - Younhee Paik.

Comment by AB: Classic abstract expressionist style paintings and mixed media works by Jeff Adams have an earthy organic feel, and actually look old... but at the same time, quite contemporary. A pretty slick trick if you can pull it off; Adams can. In the rear gallery find slick oil paintings and mixed media works on canvas and aluminum by Younhee Paik. Good show on both counts; check it out.

Eleanor Harwood Gallery: Gideon Chase - And Suddenly This.

Review by Clare Coppel: At Eleanor Harwood Gallery, Gideon Chase shows a series of images based on mundane objects, but in unusual combinations and with alluring titles like "One Possible Outcome" and "Universe Horse." Gideon tells me he had been working with a lot of diagrams at the time he created these images, and experience which influenced his choice to present the images as floating in ample negative space.

Comment by AB: Engaging work; superior detail. Sidle on by; you'll like it.

Soap Gallery: Covert Activity, Continuing Meditations on Multi-Dimensional Existence - David Fallis and Tara Foley.

Review by RWM: Woodcut depictions of beer, wine and mixed drinks; the idea of alcohol-as-art stands out. Intoxicating for some apparently, as two are already sold.

Comment by AB: Also on the docket-- meticulously detailed drawings by Tara Foley.

Mission Comics and Art: Riddler's Mother - Michael Capozzola.

Review by Clare Coppel: At Mission Comics and Art is "Riddler's Mother" (June 5th-July 6th) a show of pen, ink and watercolor works by Michael Capozzola. His comic "Surveillance Caricatures" can be seen in the San Francisco Chronicle every week. Capozzola's images capture pop culture and San Francisco culture of the moment in particular, such as Le Petit Zombie and the cupcake fad.

Review by RWM: Icons are presented in funny ways. One cannot help but appreciate the puns. Amusing parodies good for laughs.

Guerrero Gallery: Brett Cook - Supernatural.

Comment by AB: Superb display of altars by Brett Cook homages the likes of Arundhati Roy, Martin Luther King Jr., Cesar Chavez and Julia Butterfly Hill, and is anchored by a rivetingly heartfelt memorial for his own grandmother. With the exception of his grandmother's, these pieces were originally created and colored by hundreds of participants at collaborative events in California and New York City in 2002 and 2004. Definitely worth a visit.
