Haines Gallery: Overrated - Ai Weiwei

Comment by AB: Ai Weiwei's always got a bug up his ass about something, and you gotta hand it to the dude. He never deviates even in the least from his message. Options here include perversely luxurious wallpaper patterned with golden security cameras and Twitter logos, a series of photographs of the artist giving the finger to pretty much everything, three Lego self portraits of the artist symbolically dropping an historic Chinese urn, and more. Plus special added bonus-- a remodel of the main gallery does wonders for the space. Excellent!

Fraenkel Gallery: Christian Marclay - Six New Animations

Comment by AB: Christian Marclay's rapid-fire videos of trash on the streets like cigarette butts, bottle caps and plastic cup tops with straws through them have a certain hypnotic allure. The raw street and sidewalk settings remind me a bit of Brassai's book "Graffiti" published in 1960. You have to see these in person to really appreciate them. Stop on by.

Altman Siegel Gallery: Jessica Dickinson - Are:

Comment by AB: Paintings by Jessica Dickinson are notable for their richly textured and well-worked surfaces. Also on exhibit is a group of her "notebook drawings."

Robert Koch Gallery: Kenneth Josephson - The Light of Coincidence

Comment by AB: Five-decade survey of work by this early conceptual photographer ranges from compositions of arranged paper bags and books to photographs within photographs to atmospheric urban life views.

Gallery Wendi Norris: Val Britton - Transmissions; Miguel Angel Ríos - A Trilogy.

Comment by AB: In the front gallery, Val Britton continues to refine her complex map-like configurations, this time adding several delicate standing sculptures to the mix. In the side gallery, Miguel Angel Ríos presents works in multiple mediums including paintings, drawings, cut paper, manipulated photographs, and a video of two mules laying down a path of white powder as they meander through a desert.
