  • Fecal Face Dot Gallery: The Out-Of-Towners.

Artists: Anthony Lister (NYC), Erkut Terliksiz (Turkey), Christofer Chin (LA), Cody Hudson (Chicago), Corey Arnold (Portland), Keith Shore (New Jersey), Mel Kadel (LA), Tessar Lo (LA), & Travis Millard.

Comment by AB: As the show title indicates, it's art by artists who make their homes in locations other than San Francisco. All of 'em share one thing in common, however-- they're good at what they do. Plus the gallery's got a snappy new awning.

Iceberger Gallery: Aiyana Udesen - People and Animals.

Comment by AB: Another packed house at Iceberger. You cynics might say there's not that much to pack, but hey-- packing anything is an accomplishment these days with all the options out there. Plus the packees get to enjoy the art of Aiyana Udesen, mainly small original works on paper, at times a mite unappetizing, all competent, only $200-$300 each except for some screenprints for $25. Considering the quality of the work, particularly the colored pencil drawings, I'd say she's worth a wager. The art may appear inconsequential from a distance, but when you zoom in close, it's a whole different dealie bob.

Muddy Waters Coffee House (521 Valencia Street): Sung Yoon Kang & Steven Brown - The Mythologists.

Comment by AB: This is the surprise of the night. Curator Daniel Pelt who works at Muddy Waters and at Queen's Nails Annex tells me this two-person photography show is part of what's called "Queen's Nails Annex Extensions." Photographer Steven Brown tells me his frank unpretentious slice-of-life personality studies are of people and places he knows in Georgia. Photographer Sung Yoon Kang tells me his altered digital compositions actually consist of many individual images (or sometimes the opposite-- he removes details instead of adds 'em). For example, he adds cars to a freeway or parking lot, or people to a street scene, removes people from a city scene, or even alters the geographical or architectural makeup of a landscape or coastal scene. Good work on both counts; Sung Yoon Kang's work is particularly impressive from a technical standpoint (I think the dude's close to gallery-ready, or maybe even ready already). Worth a perusal.

Gallery Three: Joey Piziali - Spatial Disruption.

Comments by AB: Appealing multi-layered torn paper collages with geometric cut-paper overlays, mildly hypnotic, definitely proficient.

Bay Area Anarchist Book Fair and Art Show: Anti Anti Anti Anti - A group art show expressing anarchy, community, self-reliance, resistance, and freedom.

Artists: Glenn Caley Bachmann, Gary Floyd, Tony "Calzone" Garay, "Smiling" Jimmy James, Stephen MacMurray, Josh MacPhee, America Meredith, Dylan Miner, Jeremy, Alysha Sussman, Damon Votour.

Comments by AB: One of the seminal only-in-San-Francisco events of the year, the Anarchist Book Fair always offers plenty of books, pamphlets, magazines, broadsides, works of art, posters, and manuals, but anarchist fashion and accessories are playing a progressively larger role in the show. The art show, Anti Anti Anti Anti, is in an adjacent building. My favorite? Functional hobo stove art by "Smiling" Jimmy James. Prices range from free to really affordable. Your dollar goes far here.
