Jessica Silverman Gallery: Matt Lipps - The Populist Camera.

Comment by AB: Matt Lipps appropriates illustrations from the seventeen-volume Time Life series, "Library of Photography," published in 1977. He cuts and collages portions of these images into shelf-like configurations with colored photographic backgrounds, then blows up the results into large scale prints, and in so doing whips up a singular rendition of social, cultural, political and photographic history. Good show; go see.

    Fouladi Projects: Jemima Kirke.

Review by RWM: Great show for those folks who may not be happy with the way things are. Not clear on all that is wrong or what problems are being addressed in this outspoken work, but there is apparently much to complain about. A feminine perspective on contemporary angst. Not fun, but not emotionally overwrought either.

Comment by AB: For those of you keeping score at home, Jemima Kirke plays the role of "Jessa" in the HBO series, Girls. She was also recently named one of Forbe Magazine's "30 under 30" in the category of Art and Style. Her self-portrait is included among those in the show.

Dogpatch Cafe: Untethered, Drawing with Scissors - Mapworks by Mark M Garrett.

Review by RWM: Mark M Garrett's experience of the world might tear you apart. Wonderful visuals, but the symbolism is sometimes disturbing. A great frenetic encounter from a perspective that is more complicated and emotional than the visuals provided by traditional maps. Nice use of color and motion to evoke feelings rather than tell tales.
