Cain Schulte Gallery: Lars Theuerkauff - One.

Comment by AB: The title of Berlin Germany artist Lars Theuerkauff's exhibit-- One-- here at Cain Schulte Gallery signifies, among other things, that this is his first show in America, and that each of his sensitive atmospheric muted-palette paintings contains a single subject.

NOMA Gallery: Control Group. Curated by Chris Fallon and Jasmin Lim.

Artists: Nate Boyce, Joshua Churchill, Chris Fitzpatrick, Colter Jacobsen, Jennifer Locke, Sean McFarland, Keegan McHargue, Emily Prince, Paul Schiek, Leslie Shows, Margaret Tedesco, Paul Wackers, Lindsey White, David Wilson.

Comment by AB: Artists are asked to abandon their preferred modes, mediums and subject matters, and to make something entirely different and unfamiliar for a change. I must say I like the concept, the upshot making for a rather engaging display. The flip side, of course, being that way too many artists opt for the path of least resistance and end up making pretty much the same thing over and over again.

    Mina Dresden Gallery: Saudade.

Artists: Anne-Julie Aubry, Jeannie Lynn Paske, Jeremiah Ketner, Kendra Binney, Naoko Stoop.

Review by RWM: Beauty tinged with a bit of sadness, people whose expressions reveal their states of mind. Melancholic images here, but also with a sense of wonder and the search for connection. Elements of the fantastic and sometimes strange natural world are apparent as well. Nice variety in the artworks assembled. Some say that melancholy is death, but it is also an emotional place which allows us to really remember and appreciate what we once had. Sadness always respects the value of the past.

Project One Gallery: Everything is Beautiful II - René Garcia Jr.

Comment by AB: Glitter-meister René Garcia Jr. proffers yet another sparklingly splendiferous set of paintings laced with pop iconography and cheesecake. And just to show he's no one-trick pony, he weaves up a pretty peppy atom bomb throw rug. This is the closing party; too bad it's over.
